Does The Secret Work?

‘The Secret’ aka ‘The Law of Attraction’ basically states that whatever you think about you bring about and that you can be, do or have anything in your life that you so wish. The process is as simple as: 1) Ask 2) Believe 3) Receive. There are of course people who firmly believe that, yes the secret works and can see it in the world around them… and there are those who think it is an absolute non-sense.

Here we are going to take a look at a couple of the common arguments against ‘The Secret’ and see what sense we can make of it.

Does The Secret Work? Argument 1:

If ‘The Secret’ really works and it is as simple as we are told in the movie, then how come so many people claim they cannot get it to work for them?

That is a fair argument but whilst ‘The Secret’ is a simple process it does still require a fair bit of discipline to implement it properly. For example, first you have got to know what you want and this is a huge stumbling block for many. How many people if you ask them what they want out of life will be able to give you a specific answer straight away. In fact why don’t you make a point this week of asking a few of your friends what they want out of life, or even what they want from the next six months. I can tell you now that very few of them will have anything other than a vague notion of what they want and desire.

When you were a child on your birthday I’m sure you were always very careful to make sure you told your parents exactly what you wanted. You probably knew what make of trainer you wanted, what colour, size, you probably even imagined how it would feel to wear and play in those trainers. That is the clarity that you need, that is how specific your desire needs to be, simply saying I want a new job or more money or other similar statements just isn’t going to cut it.

So, this argument against the secret is already showing signs of weakness. Let’s dig a little deeper. The second step ‘Believe’. Lets assume you do have a crystal clear goal similar to the child above of exactly what you want, now the next potential problem is believing.

People can have a goal but if that is not backed up with belief then it is just a dream or a wish. The problem is that ‘The Secret’ implies that you can be, do or have ANYTHING and yes that is true…however you can only have it, if you believe that you can have it first. If you desire a million dollars cash and you are really clear about that and have been visualising this specifically but you do not really believe that your goal can come true for you then the process will not work.

The trick around this then is to choose a goal that is something you CAN believe in. Something big but not too big, something that you fell is at least within your grasp. Once you have decided upon a goal like this, then you can believe in it, genuinely from the core of your being. This will allow you to go to the next step.

‘Receiving’ is step three but once more it is not as easy as it sounds. Assuming the above steps have been taken so far then something must come of it, but in fact the word ‘receiving’ is a bit misleading. It sort of implies that your goal will just materialise out of thin air and appear in your post box or on your kitchen table. Well if that is how you feel then I’m afraid you are going to be disappointed.

The ‘receiving’ part can be in the form of an opportunity, an idea, a person, a thing, in fact it could be a myriad of things which all require some effort on your part. You have to do some work and fulfill your side of the bargain. Nobody gets something for nothing in life, a price always has to be paid. This is the part which tends to get glossed over by a lot of marketing people and gurus and can be very misleading. Effort is still required on your part and often persistent effort over a period of time. However the process will work and it will work very efficiently if all the above steps are followed.

Does The Secret Work? Argument 2:

I am quite sure the people affected by natural disasters didn’t want to be affected by them. How do you explain that in terms of ‘The Secret’ and ‘The Law of Atraction’?

This is a very difficult point to deal with and is a strong argument against the secret process, nobody effected by natural diasters I’m sure desired for them to happen. They probably instead desired for their lives to improve and the lives of their children to improve. That is what I imagine those people were desiring before those tragic events.

If that is the case and I think it is a safe bet that they collectively were desiring a better future, then we have to remember that the universe knows the fastest way to get from A to B and it always works with the laws of nature and for the greater good, even if at first that may not seem the case.

In years to come a disaster might be looked back upon as a turning point. It maybe that as a result of the tragedies that in the long run in the years ahead great strides and improvements are made in those areas effected, in things like infrastructure, housing, schooling; because of the damage done to them they may be built back to a much improved level then there pre-disaster state thus improving the lives of so many people.

In this way, even through tragedy we can still see the law of attraction process in action.

So in answer to the question ‘Does the secret work?’ a few arguments have been displayed for and against. You may agree or disagree with what was said, you can take it or leave it, however if you believe the secret works and are willing to follow the stages through with persistence then you will find success, on the other hand if you don’t believe the secret works and you try to use it, then of course don’t be surprised when you don’t receive your desires. Either way your beliefs will have been fulfilled….funny that!
